The Virginia Beach City Council is pushing for the removal of merchandise with lewd messages in oceanfront stores

The oceanfront stores in Virginia Beach are known for selling provocative and profanity-labeled merchandise, but the clothing may be pulled from display as part of a bid to preserve the area’s image as family-friendly.

The Virginia Beach City Council approved a resolution on Tuesday which urged retailers to voluntarily get rid of the “indecent” clothing, Fox News reported. The tourist hotspot is full of restaurants, hotels and stores.

Some displays reportedly include clothing on mannequins that include slogans including “It ain’t going to spank itself.”

“Not good for our brand”

“Along Atlantic Avenue, there has been a proliferation of indecent and/or vulgar T-shirts and displays in storefronts. The proliferation of such displays creates an unwelcoming environment for the very families to whom the city markets itself and the citys residents,” the resolution said, according to the outlet.

Councilman Worth Remick, who represents part of the Oceanfront told The Virginia Pilot that “enough is enough.”

“This is a calm, gentle, nice way to say this is not good for our brand, for our city,” he added.

In 1992, the city gave an identical warning against products with lewd messages in shop displays.

The products have been bestsellers

Small businesses and independent retailers, however, believe there’s a lot at stake. Many have emphasized on how these items are huge moneymakers for them.

Adam Desouki, the store manager at Ocean 11 clothing and gift shop, told Fox News that the stores shorts are some of their hottest selling products, adding that he has “no plans to stop displaying them.”

A young resident told WAVY.com that he wasn’t “offended” by the merchandise with the lewd messages. “Theyre trying to spur business things like that. I havent been offended,” 18-year-old Perry Clay said.
