The San Francisco 49ers are in the middle of a franchise-changing offseason.

Quarterback Brock Purdy is heading into his fourth NFL season, which means he is eligible for a contract extension. Since Purdy was not a first-round pick, his contract does not include a fifth-year option. If a new deal is not reached this year, he will enter free agency in 2026.

Given that Purdy led the team to the Super Bowl in 2023, it is likely that San Francisco will offer him a contract extension. However, in the recent season, the 25-year-old quarterback completed 65% of his passes for 3,864 yards, with 20 touchdowns and a career-high 12 interceptions over 15 games.

Over the weekend, San Francisco traded away one of Purdy’s favorite targets, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, to the Washington Commanders, leaving a hole in the offense.

On Tuesday, the New York Jets released wide receiver Davante Adams. The six-time Pro Bowl receiver may return to his hometown, as Adams grew up in East Palo Alto, California, about 30 miles from San Francisco.

If Adams wants to play for the 49ers, another familiar face could return to the Bay Area. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers won’t return to the Jets this upcoming season, and the Northern California native could end up in San Francisco.

The only way Rodgers seems likely to end up in San Francisco is if something happens with Purdy’s contract negotiations, but crazier things have happened. Austen Bundy from Yardbarker doesn’t think the Adams-Rodgers pairing is a far stretch.

“With sixth-year veteran wideout Brandon Aiyuk recovering from an ACL tear, Adams would be the perfect WR1 replacement,” Bundy wrote. “He could act as a safety blanket for head coach Kyle Shanahan if Aiyuk doesn’t return to his 2023 level of production that prompted a four-year, $120M contract extension (h/t: Spotrac). This would require Adams to part with Rodgers, who would be unlikely to return to the Bay Area (he played at Cal) unless the 49ers and QB Brock Purdy somehow sever ties.”

Adams spent eight seasons with the Green Bay Packers playing alongside Rodgers before being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders for 37 games before reuniting with Rodgers in New York this past October.

There is a possibility that Rodgers, who is 41 years old, may never play in the NFL again. If that happens, Adams could consider moving to the Bay Area. However, if Rodgers decides to continue playing football, Adams might prefer to stay with him, which would likely eliminate the option of joining the 49ers.
