Several quarterback-needy teams could soon come calling to inquire about the availability of Shedeur Sanders, who shone in his preseason debut for the Browns
Shedeur Sanders tenure in Cleveland may be short-lived should he continue to impress in the preseason.
On Friday, Sanders turned heads during his strong NFL debut for the Cleveland Browns, completing 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers. Yet following the dominant showing, Sanders conceded that hes unsure if his performance will be enough to convince the Browns to move him up in the depth chart.
With Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel getting healthier by the day, not to mention Joe Flacco and Tyler Snoop Huntleys presence on the roster, Sanders has struggled to carve out a meaningful role at Browns training camp. The rookie signal-caller has mostly taken reps with the second and third-team units despite head coach Kevin Stefanskis promise to spread out the snaps. It comes after he suffered a fresh Browns setback.
We’re going to continue to mix these guys, Stefanski told reporters on Monday. We are trying to be very intentional about our quarterbacks development, and Im really pleased with where both our young guys are.
And I could say that about our entire rookie class. Theyre all working very hard. Theyre all taking coaching and understanding that this is a, you know, a progression for them.
Given the Browns abundance of quarterbacks, it likely wont be long before several teams across the league start calling about several of the signal-callers buried in the depth chart.
Below, Mirror U.S. Sports looks at three potential landing spots for Sanders.
With only a handful of weeks remaining before the regular-season opener, quarterback Matthew Stafford is still dealing with an aggravated disk in his back that delayed his highly anticipated return to practice.
As worries continue to swirl around the 37-year-olds availability for Week 1, the Rams could opt to bring in Sanders as insurance.
In Los Angeles, Sanders would be able to not only learn under one of the leagues best offensive-minded coaches in Sean McVay but also pick the brains of two veteran signal-callers, Stafford and Jimmy Garoppolo.
The Lions quarterback room, barring Jared Goff, leaves much to be desired, with Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen manning the QB2 and QB3 roster spots, respectively.
Last season, Detroit showed how little trust they have in Hooker by signing Teddy Bridgewater to the active roster ahead of its playoff push. The 32-year-old is no longer on the market, however, after signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.
Hooker didnt exactly impress in the Lions preseason opener versus the Atlanta Falcons, either, routinely showcasing poor ball security and fumbling twice.
It remains to be seen how much longer of a leash Hooker has, though Sanders could be a viable option should the Lions look to find a more dependable backup.
The Raiders already improved their quarterback room via trade this offseason upon acquiring Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks. Las Vegas could look to further improve at the position by making a deal for Sanders, who has a close relationship with minority owner Tom Brady.
At the moment, the Raiders only boast three quarterbacks on the roster, with Aidan O’Connell manning the QB2 spot. The Purdue product has started 17 games over the past two seasons, but has failed to establish himself as a reliable option under center.
