The second season of James Gunn’s HBO Max show Peacemaker has finally given DC Comics a major win by earning itself a record Rotten Tomatoes score.
Peacemaker Season 2 has earned a 98% certified fresh critic score on the movie and television reviews site, earning just one negative review. However, this is hardly a surprise as Season 1 was also highly scored with a 93%. Still, getting a 98% certified fresh critic score is a record among DC properties.
The Penguin is the next highly scored DC endeavor, with a 95%. Next is another Gunn venture, Creature Commandos, also with 95%. The Dark Knight pulled in 94%, then Peacemaker Season 1 brought 93%, and Wonder Woman with the same. Yet another project helmed by Gunn, who recently revealed the Supergirl poster, The Suicide Squad, ranked at 90%.
Gunn keeps claiming that watching Peacemaker Season 2 is essential in keeping up with the future of DC. It will explain how parts of Peacemaker Season 1 and Suicide Squad are now DCU canon, while also leading to a new era. The director also affirms that the last episode of the season is going to blow fans’ minds and feature big-name guest appearances.
Season 2 picks up months after the events of Season 1’s Butterfly alien invasion and centers on the events following the death of Christopher Smiths (John Cena) white supremacist father, Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick).
Smith, aka Peacemaker, finds another dimensional portal and embarks on a life thats better than his real life, especially with girlfriend Harcourt (Jennifer Holland).
Gunn told Deadline that while his original intention was to write Season 2 of Peacemaker before Superman, that plan changed once he took over at Warner Bros DC Studios.
The multi-dimensional universe in Superman plays a significant role in Smiths future storyline, which Gunn wrote after Man of Steel. Still, Gunn had to awe the initial draft.
“The first time I wrote a rough outline of Season 2, it had to do with other white supremacist superheroes who were after Peacemaker for killing his father because he was their comrade,” Gunn said. “For me, it played a little bit too much like season one and I wanted to turn the story on its heels.
“I wanted Peacemaker to be this character who had to really deal with the ramifications of his actions in season one, and deal with his emotional reality of the demons that he discovered in season one and how does he face that. That seemed to work much better for that.”
Now that Peacemaker Season 2 has premiered, it will air seven more episodes on a one episode per week, week-by-week release schedulewhich is exactly how Gunn wanted it.
Responding to a fan urging him to drop all eight episodes, Gunn wrote on X, “No way! The anticipation and conversation around dropping an episode week to week is part of the fun!”
